Former Nigerian Super Eagles captain and coach, Late Stephen Okechukwu Keshi is being honoured today, January 23rd by tech Giant Google with a doodle on the occasion of his post-humous birthday. Keshi would have been 56 today.

Google said the doodle was to recognise the legacy  of the former coach Super Eagles captain  who died on June 7, 2016 in Benin at 54.

Doodles are changes made to the Google logo to celebrate holidays, anniversaries, and the lives of famous artists, pioneers, and scientists and great men who have their marks.

We look at nine things you probably didn’t know about the iconic Nigerian gaffer.

 

Google is also celebrating him by using him as its doodle.

1.Stephen Keshi, a native of Edo State was born 23rd January 1962 in Azare, Bauchi State.

2. Keshi was educated at Saint Finbarr’s College in Akoka. He subsequently received his high school certificate at Saint Gregory’s College.

3.) He was head coach of the Junior Eagles at the 2001 African Youth Championship.

4.) He coached the Togo national football team between 2004 and 2006, surprisingly leading them to their first World Cup tournament, Germany 2006.

5.) Keshi also coached the Mali national football team after being appointed in April 2008 on a two-year deal but was sacked in January 2010, after Mali’s early exit in the Nations cup.

6.) He was the coach of Nigeria between 2011 and 2015, winning the African cup of Nations in 2013 and qualifying Nigeria for the FIFA Confederation cup and the World Cup.

7.) As a footballer, Keshi won the West African Club Championship (1983, 1984), Coupe Houphoet Boigny (1985, 1986), Belgian Cup (1988, 1989) among others.

8.) He was one of the only two people to win the African Cup of Nations both as a player and as a coach.( The other person is Egypt’s Mahmoud El-Gohary)

9.) His wife,Kate (née Abureme), whom he had been married to for 33 years and had four children with, died in December 2015 after a long battle with cancer. He never got over her death.
