If a live-action education of beloved children’s stories was met with uncertainty initially, this year has certainly begun to prove its worth already. With Cinderella and Beauty and the Beast behind us, and Mulan just around the corner, Disney is harnessing its storytelling ability in bringing its animated features to life.
As well as these remakes, the less trodden path of a reconstructed portrait of the storytellers themselves is set to see another instalment, as Goodbye Christopher Robin offers a glimpse into the life of A. A. Milne, better known as the mind behind the world of Winnie the Pooh, with a first trailer just released.
If we cast our sights back to Saving Mr. Banks and remember the nostalgic tenderness brought by the fictional reconstruction of Mary Poppins in its early production stages, it’s easy to see the appeal of this upcoming feature.
Goodbye Christopher Robin is set to focus on the family’s story through the years and their readjustment to fame in the aftermath of the First World War, with the success of the stories and Milne’s relationship with his wife and son. The trailer introduces Domnhall Gleeson as the author, and Margot Robbie as his wife, as well as teasing the appearance of Kelly McDonald as Christopher Robin’s nanny.
Director Simon Curtis comes to the project following work on My Week With Marilyn and David Copperfield ; promising an intimate and respectful portrayal of a pillar in children’s literature and adults’ nostalgia.
Honoring bedtime stories old and new, the movie offers a welcome trip down memory lane for us all – it turns out that Winnie the Pooh held more hand than just one in the end.
Goodbye Christopher Robin is set to be released on 10 November 2017.
