An Indian man was made to strum his beloved guitar during brain surgery – so doctors could make sure nothing went wrong.

Abhishek Prasad, 37, was given the instrument during the the complex operation to treat a rare neurological disorder.

Before the operation, the musician had cramp in fingers on one hand that had stopped him from playing the guitar properly.

The incredible seven-hour long procedure, which completely cured him of his problem, was captured on footage.

How the operation was performed

Surgeons drilled into his skull and attached an electrode that allowed them to pinpoint the part of his brain affected.

This allowed the team at Bhagwan Mahaveer Jain Hospital, Bangalore, to treat the rare nerve disorder – called ‘musicians dystonia’.

Dystonia is a painful disorder which causes involuntary muscle contracts and abnormal postures.

‘He was fully awake’

Dr Sharan Srinivasan, who performed the operation, said: ‘During this entire surgery Abhishek was fully awake and was playing the guitar, since this problem only comes when he tries to play.

‘This feedback was very important for the doctors to get the exact location of the target to be lesioned.’

Surreal experience

Mr Prasad described the surreal experience of being conscious on the operating table to the Times of India.

He told the newspaper: ‘I was amazed to see my fingers improve magically on the operation table itself.

‘By the end of the surgery, my fingers were 100 per cent cured and I could move them like before.’

Numerous specialists

Mr Prasad sought treatment from numerous specialists before being recommended the bizarre procedure.

He had stitches removed today while in hospital. He thanked doctors and played a few tunes to demonstrate how well he had recovered.
